Mars is a planet that has received considerable attention from Hollywood over the years. For decades, the mid-20th century, Hollywood films were produced in Hollywood representing Martians as little green men who were nasty Earth invaders. Sometimes men from Mars simply sported green face paint, but almost always wearing a suit of some kind.

Sometimes, however, the Martians were not small or green. In movies called "Flying Disc Man from Mars" (1950) and "Flight to Mars" (1951), Mars looked like us. However, in 1960 the movie called "The angry red planet". no shortage scary creatures from Mars. Martian monsters include green giant bat-spiders, man-eating plants, amorphous gliding eye drops, and three-eyed Martians with devil horns.

In "War of the Worlds," the classic novel by HG Wells, 1898, the Martian invaders described as an earthquake-shaped mouth V, big brains, arms, intense eyes and an oily brown skin. Martian robots used for manual labor.

In the 1953 film, "Invaders from Mars", Mars Hollywood shows for the first time in color. While the master of Mars is most similar to Wells' literary creature, workers are humanoid, with ping-pong eyes and three fingers. And they are unique in their sweatshirts with large zipper running up the back.

However, in the decade 1960, the television would be a much more positive impression of the Martians. In 1963, in the sitcom "My Favorite Martian" actor Ray Walston friendly was only different from humans for the retractable antenna sitting on top of the human head otherwise normal.

I was thinking about how all this Hollywood science fiction and hype has shaped our thinking on Mars, as he watched the successful landing of the robotic spacecraft on the surface NASA the planet, the other day. Phoenix will be fixed for three months on Mars, since it performs these scientific operations in the planet's surface. Camera Stereo Phoenix, located on its 2-meter (6.6 feet) mast, use two "eyes" to reveal a great prospect for resolution of the geology of target site. This will also provide range maps for use in choosing where to dig. The multi-spectral capability will enable the identification of local minerals.

Solar craft will deploy a robotic arm to dig down vertically through the soil towards the icy crust of the planet. The arm was designed to deliver Martian soil samples for wet chemistry laboratory of the spacecraft and small furnaces for scientific analysis. Samples will be heated to release volatiles that can be examined for their chemical composition and other characteristics. One objective is to verify whether the samples subsoil are carbon compounds that contain the essential ingredients of life.

To increase scientific understanding of atmospheric processes Mars, Phoenix will scan the atmosphere for up to twelve miles in altitude, obtaining data about the formation, duration and movement of clouds, fog and dust plumes. It also takes temperature and pressure sensors.

A better understanding of Mars is important to scientists as the planet is the primary long-term goal for human exploration. Current plans are for a colonization of the Moon by NASA over the next decade. An outpost on the lunar surface would launch a future spacecraft to Mars a distinct possibility in the following decades.

Ninety days determine the ultimate success of the first robotic spacecraft to land on Mars in more than a decade. The Phoenix will become a pioneer for future missions that will continue to explore the planet's surface. As for all those movies about little green men from Mars and other creatures are concerned, true science is about to replace science fiction. In fact, NASA's Phoenix spacecraft has reached the surface of Mars. Their arrival marks the end of the Martians as represented in the Hollywood fiction.
