Adams Hockey

Like many hockey fans, I was happy that hockey was back this year. I did not care that ESPN did not renew its television contract with the NHL – I thought OLN which could have a few hiccups, but overall they were going to do well. I was wrong. OLN has been a disaster for the entire season and not getting better.
I understand they've never done before in the NHL, and had only a few months to hire announcers, cameramen, build a set, etc., but worst of all is that no have been improving and learning from their mistakes. Emissions are still as mediocre as they were on opening night.
After watching the opening weekend of the 2006 NHL Playoffs, here are my thoughts:
– The camera angles are mediocre at best. The camera for the first 10 minutes of Oilers vs Red Wings Game 1 was enlarged to the point where I could see the entire ice. This would be great except for the fact that it is impossible to see the disc or read a number T-shirt (and no, I'm not seeing on TV of 13 "). which is fixed within minutes, but are these things we should address in the postseason? should t they have discovered how a movie playing in the Joe Louis Arena during the regular season?
– Jack Edwards should not do play by play for the playoffs nationally televised. I miss the days of Gary Thorne / Bill Clement and Steve Levy / Darren Pang on ESPN and ESPN2.
– Speaking of Bill Clement, who is not a type study, which is a color commentator. Next season please find a type of study so you can move back to the cabin Clemente where it belongs.
– No OLN's fault, but no other network (ie, ESPN 2) is detrimental to the fans. We used to get to see two playoff games at once, now have one.
– The score takes up too much of the screen at the top. Must we see the giant logos of each team at all times? All it does is take up space and force to OLN put a black bar at the top of the screen so that the logos can fit, losing more space. Good luck trying to find the disk when scoreboard updates and pop-up ads (which is quite often) eat even more space.
– With two minutes in the Oilers vs Red Wings Game 1, with the score tied at 2, the camera cut to the … less than thirty seconds. This is unacceptable. Period.
– The second game of the double header on Friday, Anaheim vs. Calgary, was "the coverage premiums, "ie CBC feed OLN broadcasts only. Boys weak, weak. What, you can not afford to send more than a film crew one night? Maybe the NHL should have given coverage to a network that could handle it (of course, if the NHL does not demand as much money from ESPN, would not have this problem first).
And that was just the first weekend of coverage. It will be a long playoff season …

Hockey’s Odyssey $13.24 Trevor Vanderputt is a household name in Calcutta Anglo-Indian circles – a coach’s coach, teacher of future champions, Bengal State Team Selector, and Director of Coaching, ACT Hockey Association, Canberra, Australia. Judge for yourself from the list of Australian greats featured in this book: Mike Nobbs; Don Smart; Terry Walsh; Bob Andrew; Merv Adams; Syd Johnson; Richard Charlesworth; Dick Aggiss. And that is only half of Trevor’s remarkable legacy! For before Australia, there was India – unparalleled Olympic custodian of hockey glory. Dhyan Chand, Leslie Claudius, Joe Gallibardy, Dick Carr, Balbir and Gurbux are some of the hockey legends of the sub-continent to figure in this book. HOCKEY’S ODYSSEY is biography, autobiography and chronicle. In the end, it isn’t only about hockey. It’s about life and sportsmanship in two hockey-loving nations – India and Australia. Trevor Vanderputt has always loved hockey. His contribution at many levels of hockey will probably never be fully appreciated, except for those who knew. I am fortunate enough to be one of them. I am sure his book will raise a lot of interest, be full of great memories and as usual with Trevor, just sprinkled with a small amount of controversy. Richard Aggiss, AM Australian Coach ‘81-88, AIS Head Coach ‘84-94. Had only every hockey enthusiast like Vanderputt put together their lifetime experience, the hockey world would have had plenty of useful literature. But not many have done that. Vanderputt deserves cornucopia of encomiums for just doing the same. I repeat it is a humble hockey lover’s lifetime story, told in a humbler way. K.Arumugam, Recognised Chronicler of Indian Hockey. |

Gabby: Confessions of a Hockey Lifer $15.39 Bruce Boudreau is living a hockey Cinderella story. After more than three decades in the minor leagues as a player and coach, he was promoted to head coach of the Washington Capitals in 2007. Boudreau revived the Caps, written off as dead, to a division championship and received the Jack Adams award as the National Hockey League’s Coach of the Year in June 2008.His story is an entertaining odyssey of triumph, disappointment, and perseverance, stretching from Toronto to Washington. As a pro rookie, Boudreau had a cameo appearance in Slap Shot with star Paul Newman. Today Boudreau coaches superstar Alexander Ovechkin and a young Washington club poised to become an elite NHL team vying for the Stanley Cup.Boudreau stole the limelight at the 2008 NHL Awards Show with his self-deprecating and folksy manner, which has made him a popular personality at every stop he’s made. Hockey fans know there’s only one Boudreau. An inspiring story of perseverance and dedication in pro hockey |

It was in 1984, on the day after Team Canada had defeated the hated Soviet national team 3 to 2 in overtime and, a committed hockey fan, he was dying to chat with someone, anyone, about the great victory the night before. The first person he encountered was a young English professor, a good but perhaps pretentious scholar who had once been overheard saying that she could not see how anyone could live without reading Henry James. Despite her erudition, like Richards she was from small-town New Brunswick, and because of this, he thought, she must be a hockey fan. Did you see the game last night? No, she replied, we don’t have a television … don’t approve of it, but continued on saying that her husband had been eager to find out the result that morning on the radio.brHe’s heartbroken, she said. We were going for the Russians. Richards’ face displayed his bewilderment at her treasonous statement.brWell we both hate Gretzky, you see. Her accent now turned slightly British … he’s just such a Canadian. She smiled. He paused, uncomfortably, and then asked her:brYou hate greatness … or just Canadian greatness? |

Don Cherry’s Hard Hitting Hockey $21.95 Outspoken, outrageous and at times outlandish, Don Cherry has been called many things during his nearly 30 years with CBCs Hockey Night in Canada. But, hes never been accused of being at a loss for words. A former player, Cherry retired in 1970 and soon created a career for himself in both minor and major league coaching. His greatest fame as a coach was achieved in fabled playoff battles with the Montreal Canadiens, against which Cherry coached in two consecutive Stanley Cup finals with the Boston Bruins along the way to winning the Jack Adams award for Coach of the Year. Cherry is known as a teacher and a mentor, yet his teams played with determination, skill and grit, filling arenas wherever they played. Cherry brings this same brand of insight, wit, passion and straight-shooting hockey commentary to his latest release of Rock em Sock em Hockey™ featuring all the action, hits and bloopers from the past NHL season — plus a tussle or two. |

Adams on Adams $6.98 John Adams insisted that his was a life insignificantly lived, yet he took great pride in having played an integral role in the birth of a nation. His writings were spiced with the wit and humor of a person who took his ideas seriously but not himself. When Adams began writing early in his career, he realized, "A pen is certainly an excellent instrument to fix a man?s attention and to inflame his ambition." Through his writings, both public and private, John Adams speaks of his rise from a country lawyer to the nation?s highest office by the force of his personality. Adams on Adams is an autobiographical account of an extraordinary journey. Drawing from Adams?s own letters, diaries, notes, and autobiographies, editor Paul M. Zall creates a fresh portrait of the nation?s second president. Adams?s words reveal how a man lacking the advantages of money, connections, class, or patronage promoted American independence at home and abroad. Zall focuses on how the president?s inner strengths, although at times conflicting with his sense of inferiority and his obsession with fame, helped win self-rule for America and national respect abroad. Adams?s writings are passionate and persistent; according to Thomas Jefferson, Adams was "always an honest man, often a great one?but sometimes absolutely mad." His abrasive personality earned him the name "The Last Angry Man." Despite this, Adams achieved respect, diplomatic recognition, and peace for an emerging nation, as well as credit for the country?s survival during its difficult early years. Although he believed the voice of the people was as sacred as the voice of God, Adams learned through experience that Americans could be "the silliest people under Heaven," and sometimes he counted himself among them. As president, Adams took pride in establishing a navy whose presence ensured stability and helped in peace negotiations with Native Americans and foreign countries. After he retired, Adams spent a quarter-century writing memoirs, letters, and articles in newspapers defending himself against being labeled an "aristocrat" or "monarchist" for insisting on a strong, well-balanced government as the best defense against the self-delusions of blind ambition or personal gratification. Adams on Adams is a new look at one of America?s most famous presidents as the determined leader follows his passions for America and her future. Adams?s feisty temperament, combined with his conversational style of writing, depicts a man who lived and died by his word. |
